Playful Sophisticated Educational Sculptures
At the nexus of art, civic sculpture, and musical instrument, our custom
hydraulophones challenge traditional notions of what public space can be
(see our largest hydraulophone installation at the Ontario
Science Centre).
Inherent to the Hydraulophone is its ability to redefine public space and human
interaction with it. Our society has rigid conceptions of what cultural
function public art and sculptures serve. In serious spaces like university
campuses and business parks the role of art and sculpture is to be looked at
and admired on a purely aesthetic level, dissociated from notions of fun and
play. In less serious spaces like public parks and beaches, aesthetic value is
compromised for the functionality of aquatic play. Hydraulophones appropriate,
alter, and bridge these traditional roles by existing as majestic, beautiful
sculptures and as articles of play. The public sphere is encouraged to
challenge their perceptions of public space by simultaneously enjoying
aesthetic value and participating with them intimately as active parts of their
shared environment. Funtain takes art and play seriously.
